Kick start your day with a good breakfast

Wild and Wooly Breakfast

on December 9, 2013

I pre-cooked some Irish oatmeal last night, fully expecting to load it up with sweet flavors: cranberries, honey, or banana. We woke up to a gray morning, wet and threatening to get wetter. I thought, “I need meat!” In a little olive oil, I sauteed  a TBSP of loose sausage meat with half a chopped shallot and diced red pepper, mixed it with the oatmeal, and seasoned it all with salt and pepper. Perfect! As the trees dripped and the air chilled, I braved the walk from First Avenue to Broadway, through Central Park, a solitary stroll, pretty much, which fit my mood of brooding preparation for another day in the bookselling wars.

There’s Ireland, the welcoming land of thick green grass that grows right down to wide white strands of beach.

And there’s Ireland in a lashing rain storm, the wind so strong you could be swept right off the cliff into the sea below.

Love Ireland in all its moods! Amazing how one simple ingredient, steel-cut oats, can honor them all.
